Unit Activities During COVID-19

The COVID-19 virus has impacted all of us, including our Scouting units. Keep reading below for ideas and activities that you can implement in your units to keep the fun and learning going, even while physically separated.

Virtual Meetings

In the age of technology, we are fortunate to have many different ways to connect remotely, including:

• Facebook Live
• Google Hangouts
• Zoom
  (and many others)

All you need is a device with a camera (laptop/PC, phone, tablet) and one of the above services, all of which offer FREE versions. Struggling to figure out how to do this? Ask one of your youth — they have grown up using these technologies practically since birth and are well-versed in how to get things going!

Remote Activities

Here are a few activity ideas for remote meetings, or for Scouts to do while your unit meetings are on hiatus:

Especially for Cub Scouts

• Adventure Bingo

Anyone

• Take a Virtual District Hike
• Explore a Museum or Zoo, such as:
  • The National Cowboy Museum
  • The Louvre
  • The Smithsonian National Museum of History
  • NASA’s Langley Research Center
  • Try out some of the BASF Science Club experiments (+1 for exploding baggies!!)
  • Create an interactive story, game or animation using MIT’s Scratch
  • …and dozens more
• Set up a phone call/video call with a merit badge counselor to work on one of your requirements (NOTE: a parent must be present!)
• Use this “down time” to get together virtually to plan your next big Pack, Troop, Crew or Post activity or outing.  One of the tools at left can help.
